In a herd, lead horses are caretakers; they are willing to put the safetly and concerns of their group ahead of their own. As a result, they stablish their leadership because the other horses recognize that they care about them. Leaders pay attention to the things that every member needs. They are willing to fight and even die for their herds.A lead mare is in charge of the day-to-day running of the family group. She is responsible for scolding another member of the herd for bad behavior. And it is she who determines whether, or not, they can remain part of the herd. I as a lead mare promise to lead, care, scolding bad behavior, fight, and even die for my herd....because I am Libertad, Lead Mare of the Northern Herd"
